I dug in the dirt.
Shooing the flies away & stinky with sweat,
I dug & I dug & I dug...
using a shovel, a spade & my hands.
I pulled at the weeds and thorny bushes and poison ivy,
caring not if I got pricked, dirty, blistered or chafed.
Piling the debris high like a mausoleum of sorts.
I then scooped, hauled & tossed all the spent soil.
Black dirt gone gray, depleted of all it's nutrients.
The weight of the dirt turned the makeshift mausoleum into a tight little tomb.
And just as the gluttonous weeds had once robbed the soil of all of its nutrients,
the soil now serves as a blanket to suffocate the weeds.
Full circle.
All the while, I looked for a sign, a talisman, a keeper.
Some marbles or heart-shaped rocks.
None were found.
I just want to go to the river...
But instead, I throw black dirt, manure & some...
Scatter it, toss it, turn it, tear it up
Feeling the liberation of things that will be
rich soil, bright flowers, sunshine
and, like at the river...
Butterflies & dragonflies.
Take me to the river and drop me in the water
Dip me in the river, drop me in the water*

Dig deep little one. Empty Mother Nature's pockets. Yeah, sometimes we have to move the Earth ourselves...tilt it just a little...for everything to fall into place.....
And then, sweet Child, run to the river...wade ankle deep in her passing puddles, splash and laugh and hunt for treasures on her underbelly...
in the end, peace wins.....
Beautiful paiting, indeed!
I for one am very suprised no marbles were un-earthed
I love taking the dead gray earth and mixing it with new fresh dirt and bringing to life the color and depth of plants and flowers.
Not much of a dirt man here, but I sure dig the river. I’m going to party cove this weekend!!! I hope you have a good one!
i can hear the little angel whispering "grow, grow".
I have a truck full of composted steer manure and shredded garden waste just waiting for my decision as to where my next garden mound shall be.
If you are not growing douglas Fir trees, this soil around here is too rocky and full of minerals to grow the goods.
Don't lose your marbles, oh blonde and skinny one...
hmmm...reading this, i miss my gardening...all i have at my present home is a 5X5 patch to sow everything i want to..pathetic but it would have to do:D
enjoy ur gardening...
i'm still looking for marbles and heart-shaped rocks. i'll find some one day...
this is like my lucky day, with so many great posts to read!
i just love this.. from horseflies, houseflies to butterflies and dragonflies
and singleton's comment about us sometimes having to move the earth ourselves
"to movers and shakers
diggers and splashers"
I can smell that rich soil, reach out to touch that precious marker, and almost feel the sweet breeze of a dragon-fly wing, as it brushes gently past my cheek.
Simply beautiful, sweet girl, thank you. x
Singleton~Lol...and run to the river, I did! Thta's where that dragonfly in the pic caught up with me ;)
Orhan~ I, too, was surprised...but then again, I never find anything when I'm looking for it. Funny, how I can spot them if simply walking back from the mailbox, peeking their little heads out, but let me excavate the yard & I find none. Just another 'meant to be.'
bardouble~ Gardening is refreshing. Everything grows with a little love.
Spongy~ I'll meet you at party cove this week-end. I'll be the girl that's all dirty ;)
kj~ ;)I can hear the wings just a flappin'
scott~ lol, I too have a mound out back of all that composted good stuff. It's not real pretty but makes for a good worm farm.
linalani~ sounds good to me, no grass to mow! That's my objective. Lol, discovered last year that our tomatos and corn grow best in pots anyway ;)
mindy~ I actually found a heart-shaped rock at the river, but mother nature wouldn't let me keep it...only the memories were for keeps. That's how it is sometimes.
she~ I'll join you in a toast to "to movers and shakers
diggers and splashers" anyday!
shrink~ Thank you for kind words and good company!
Perfect ending to a manure and dirt mix day.
Now for a soft, steady rain......
Grow little flowers, grow!
I love Spring, even more than summer. Enjjoy yours.
Like Joni, I need to get back to the garden...
Beautiful slk, "butterflies and moon beams, and fairy-tales. that's all she ever thinks of, is ridind with the wind" Little Wing.
Just like an alchemist finding the treasure in the dirt, that's exactly where it is and you've put me in minde of it thank you.
"....just as the gluttonous weeds had once robbed the soil of all of its nutrients....., full circle"
Quote: all the power that would ever do evil but engender good"
I bet you felt good after writing that.
Y;-) Paddy
Mel~ LoL, yes! grow, grow , grow. Metaphors and all!
BBE~ Enjoy Indeed! You too! I love Spring & summer & Fall. Lol, I cope with Winter.
Enemy~ There is something about playing in the dirt taht is rejuvenating.
Paddy~ You are a kindred spirit! 'Little Wing' is one of my ALL-Time Favorite songs! In fact, I have told many a soul that when I die, toss my ashes, plant a dogwood and play Little Wings for me (SRV version please;) Every end is a new beginning...
Everything ALWAYS goes full circle! All the while we are looking for signs and keepers... Yes Paige! It is good to help it by fertilizing.. the earth becomes richer for it!
Loved this post!
Sounds like too much work.
I love this post! And the pictures (especially the very last one) are all so exquisite!
Soon you'll have such a beautiful garden. :)
I need to go outside and pick weeds too, it looks like a jungle. :p
Angela Marie~May the circle be unbroken...
Slick~ Work is good, as Old Lady Doris says 'Idle time leads to an idle mind & that is the devils' playground' LoL...hard work keeps me out of trouble!
Princess Banter~ Ah, I agree about the last pic. it is taken from from my favorite rock to perch myself upon in the midst of our local river.
Anne~ A Jungle? That sounds great to me! My objective is to have NO grass to mow! ;)
Tai~ Plants, of all sizes, are good ;)they give us oxygen!
Lovely images, lovely words.
oh! my band does a version of Take Me to the River - starting with a kind Talking Heads chorus and then segueing into Al Green. . .
lovely images!
I, like the view....
I think I would really really like that sound.....
take me to the river.....
