Left-Overs

Please click HERE for a glimpse of some of the beautiful left-overs we still have lingering around, waiting...from the 9th ward, post-Katrina.
Please see if there is anything you can do, too.

Although Smokie, pictured left, did not come from the 9th Ward, he arrived into our home in similar condition ...swollen red, puss-filled skin, hair falling out, listless, sick & totally withdrawn.. Now Smokie is filled with excitement, energy & of course, unconditional love. Most of the animals you see on the link above have already been healed & nurtured & now they are just waiting...

Yes, this is the same dog! Back in '05 when we acquired him, he often laid on his back & smiled. He seemed releived to be indoors, away from the heat, the gnats, flies & misquitos. Now he loves to go outside & when you rub his back, his chest, neck or belly he gets t
hat same impish grin. It's amazing how many people will say 'I'd take him,' (as if I am offering any of my dogs up), when no-one wanted him when he was down & out, sick & dying. Look inside folks. It's there & always has been. Hope, Faith, Love, Perseverance.

Okay, Here's third pic of Smokie with his eyes open & a bit more fur still left (he had to lose it all before he got better) But his eyes are open so that you can see his eyes. :) They are the same & show that he is, in fact, the same dog. A little bit of love & attention go a long way :)

Whoops...should have said more. If you can't adopt or give money (it is a no kill rescue & Katrina saw their intake of animals [not just dogs & cats] swelter beyond belief) then perhaps you can post a link. Something is better than nothing ~ peace, love & paws for the cause.

I can't believe that is the same dog, a very lucky hound.

Lucky indeed 'cuz he was on his way to euthanasia the very day I took him. But, I'm the really lucky one...for he's resting his big ole' head on my feet right now, keeping these toes warm on this, our first, wintery night!

Awww, thank you so much for taking care of animals like this. I'm so glad there are people in this country that care about them.

That can't be the same pup.

He's so lucky that you and people like you do what you do.

Ok, for all you skeptics, I will post a third pic with Smokie sitting up...look into those eyes & you'll know it's the same pup.
Dogpackrescue.org had about 30 dogs before Katrina. Almost immediately that # swelled to over 150 & despite constant adoptions, she still has an extensive # of them left.

Large black dogs are the least likely to get adopted out...and thats sad...they are more hugable!
Kat (Katrina) looks to be all full blooded lab (the bestest breed ever, outside of MUTTS).
Out of the 8 dogs taken in here over the past 10 years...Harley, Crunch, Brodie, Smokie, Vilulah were all big black dogs. (well, Vilulah is a short 11" high, but is 33" long & weighs 44 lbs)Two large yellow dogs (Codie & Ander the Giant) and one blue-brindle (Marbeline)

The older I get the more empathy I gain for other biological organisms. We're not that different as it turns out and it's always heartbreaking to see some mangy canine trying desperately to scratch out a living in some gawd-forsaken place, a painful indicator too that the humans there aren't doing much better.

Smokie is a very appropriate name for a dog. My kid sister got a couple of dogs when she was much younger and their names are Laura and David. I don't know why.

I love you skinny little sib. And you could tell this story FIVE more times from your living room and it would be the same love story over and over again!

THanks for entertaining me guys... last night I was babmbling thru the web & found the dog in the link & it broke my heart. So beautiful & all better now, just waiting....
Black dogs & big dogs...always the last to be adopted :(
Last week a Major at the local police dep't told me that he appreciated my 'passion' (that'll be another post) & last night I found my pasiion over-running...
If my 1/3 acre were 3 acres...if my 5 dogs didn't already eat more than me ... if I just had more space, more time & more money, I would have more dogs

Looks like Smokie sure is lucky to have you! I'm sure you feel pretty lucky though too. Animals are so funny that way.
