Years and years ago, in a Sociology class, our professor asked us what the number one influence was upon who our life partner would be.
Many of us answered love, some answered money, family obligations etc....
but most said love.
Surprisingly enough, but making perfect sense, the answer was 'proximity.'
Interesting.
If our soul mate lived on the other side of the world, we might not ever meet them.
Love is always here, just around the corner, at the end of the street, two steps in front of own feet, at the tip of our fingers and at the tip of our noses...we just don't always see it, sense it, recognize it ... but it's always here. And it's always there.
We are all capable of many loves.
We love our parents, our children, our friends, our families, our neighbors, ourselves .... Just because we love one parent does not mean we do not love the other.
Just because we love one child does not mean we are incapable of loving another.
And if we have lost our love partners, for whatever reason, it doesn't mean that they were not our loves or that we are incapable of loving another.
Our soul, our spirit, our love and nature is multi-faceted. Our minds should be too.
A midnight rambling prompted by the notion that we have just one soul-mate...

You're so right!
Our soul, spirit, and nature HAVE to be multi-faceted.
Look at how many KINDS of love you mentioned.
Here's to keeping those mind windows open.
Of course all kinds of love can sneak right into the back door of the heart while we aren't looking. Best we not lock it up too tightly,,, who'd want to miss that!
Amen Sista, I believe that our capacity to Love has no bounds. It is our life filters, gained from living our lives through experience, that sometimes crawl into the space and inhibits us from truly Loving at full potential. The nice part about it is that there are beautiful people, like you, that recognize and strive towards full potential. Keeping your inner eye on it. We are all connected. Awesome writing.
I also believe that it transcends the boundaries of this world. Love does not die with the body.
It is what it is . . . every moment . . . here and now . . . right where we are . . . ever changing . . . yet ever remaining the same . . .
Ah, to maintain the fluidity of mind to roll with it, accept it, and love unconditionally everyone and everything that crosses our path, each moment . . .
A worthy life's goal . . . a worthy goal for many lifetimes . . . perhaps the reason we're here . . .
Clinking to Oceans...."it is what it is"......Ahhh, sweet sister child, how blessed are we that we have been soul fated so many times, with the gift of meant~to~bes, brothers and children, lovers and friends, for lifetimes and fleeting moments....It is what it is....And it's all good in the end.....

I think we belong to soul families--never did before.
Everything is multi-faceted... especially love... I believe we have many soul-mates... but, it sure feels good when we land on one who knows our very soul!
WilsonsArt...I remember my mom telling me as a little girl 'You can never have too many friends' and 'There is something to be appreciated & loved in everyone' and she meant Every One.
LoveMeSong... Love knows no boundaries, not geographical or political, bloodlines or timelines...
Deeis4Dana...I'm with you there. Love Grows, even our love, long after our bodies have ceased. All I have to do is look at the little ones in my life and look back at Nana and it's blatant...Love Grows.
Oceans... 'It is what it is'... If you only knew how many times I have said that. I have a dear friend whom many consider abrasive & rude. I love her for it. It doesn't take away from the fact that she is honest & good...in fact her 'abrasiveness' is part of what I love. It's all in perspective.
Singleton....clinking indeed! Thinking of elders & butterflies, amethyst & heart-shaped rocks...
Just because we don't see it, doesn't mean it's not there...
Enemy...You, me, the birds, the rocks, the trees, the stars and everything in between...
Shimmerings...yes and as beautiful and sensational as that may feel, the reality (imho) is that we each are all so multi-faceted that it is impossible for anyone to know everything within us in entirety...however, to find the one that accepts, even what he/she doesn't know or perhaps is aware of, but doesn't fully understand ... P&L
I don't believe in the concept of one soul-mate either. I have many, both men and women and it just is what it is. :) What do you think bout the whole finding love when you're not searching for it thing?
Karma...kindred spirits! I don't think I have actually searched for love...but I do think that it comes to us in mysterious ways, often in ways and/or when we least expect it. However, I do think that if our minds, heart & spirit are completely closed to the notion of love, then we won't believe there is love there for us. We won't be aware of it. Like life outside of drawn curtains... just because we can't see it, doesn't mean it's no there. Awwww....ramble on....peace & love girl!
I forgot to say that your sandy line drawing mad me smile.
Love getting a peek into your Beach Album!
WilsonArt
Lol...I have a feeling that I will be dropping images from the beach for a good long while to come...
Skinny, I've never looked for love. It always just found me and it always ends badly. The people I love and who love me....well the people who "love" me just play at love. I know if I'm closed to it, it won't find me and I'm open to it but I have to wonder how many more times it's going to hurt me. Peace 'n' love to you too, girl.
Thank you :)
We are all in this together.
Much <3~~!
I love this post! Proximity leads to love . . . . that's how I met my soulmate. Browsing at the same books store discovering we both had the same taste in music and books. The rest is HISTORY!! :) He and I have not been apart since that day!
Peace,
Todd in Santa Fe
this is beautiful skinny!
love has no cap or quota; how silly.
it is as Dr Maya Angelou describes creativity:
the more you use; the more you have.
and each burning love is either true or a catalyst in that direction
"to north stars & true love!" love, ~s.
why is this very information coming to me today?
because i need it just now....
thanks, skinny.
Karma....Hmmm, maybe, just maybe, love doesn't end...maybe it just grows and changes form, function and shape and maybe that is what hurts. Love is an energy? Energy never dissipates...it just changes forms, right? So maybe if we open the parameters of how we define love, we can simultaneously allow it to expand ... even if that expansion sometimes means that it feels like it has left us behind?
Orhan...Yes, and I'm getting pretty heavy...we are all one. xox
tmusichans... Love it! So many people live and die without ever really knowing the love that is right in front of them...
KJ...and as the butterfly swims circles around my head, I see she must be circling you too...ever-so-fleeting, we are graced with the beauty & the vision. xoxox
Well--I'd say that himself and I never shoulda happened if it were up to the sociologists of the world.
Proximity, eh?
Him way over there, me way over here....nah.....I'm not buyin' it.
Connectedness happens regardless of the boundaries (which are generally self imposed, dontchathink?).
But I do agree with you on the 'one soulmate' deal.....nah......love evolves and lives whether we mean for it to nor not, regardless of distance, regardless of circumstances....it just IS.
Thank goodness!
Mel....funny that you should point out that proximity sometimes doesn't mean diddly-squat, because in reply to someone above I had written something to the affect of 'and even if he lived on opposite sides of the world from you & you never met...I believe he would still be a soul-mate' but I erased it for fear that it would be taken wrong.
Hahaha, I agree with you completely about boundaries being self-imposed, which I guess is the ultimate jist of what this post was getting at...it is what it is...lol, I so adore you!
